Military Rugby Trip to Rugby World Cup 2023
RLC Rugby make waves in France
RLC Rugby was among the exceptional touring groups that embarked on their own rugby tour whilst in France for Rugby World Cup 2023. They were able to not only witness thrilling games but also play their own fixtures. 60 individuals embarked on a 14-day journey, traversing six locations, forging new connections, and creating cherished memories.
Their journey began with a flight to Lyon. Two full days in the enchanting ‘City of Light’ provided ample time for exploration of iconic landmarks before proceeding to the OL Stadium. There, they were treated to a spectacular display of New Zealand’s prowess as they triumphed over Uruguay with a score of 73-0.
The next destination was Toulouse, offering both a playing fixture and another World Cup game. Whether it was mingling with the Flying Fijians before their match with Portugal or playing their first game against the French Fire Service team, they were treated to the unexpected throughout.
What followed was two fixtures in two different cities. They travelled to Nimes and Toulon where they explored each city and went head-to-head with Marguerittes Rugby Club and the Royal Navy Rugby Union respectively. Each fixture concluded with a social hosted by the opposing teams, allowing players the chance to get to know their opposition.
The tour reached its pinnacle with a weekend in Marseille. Despite not being initially planned, RLC Rugby received an invitation to MSG’s L’Apero event, featuring guest speaker, the legendary British rugby figure Jamie Roberts. They became the stars of the event as they displayed the traditional Siva Tau (Samoan War Dance) to our supporters. They were also in attendance for both quarter-final games in Marseille (Wales v Argentina and England v Fiji) before returning to the UK.
We sincerely hope that the members of RLC Rugby enjoyed an exceptional time and have created lifelong memories from this tour!
