Study Trip Overview

Any trip to ‘The Big Apple’ needs little introduction but in October 2018, we had our first MSG Tours Study trip head to New York for a whistle-stop Art and Design extravaganza. To broaden knowledge and for curriculum connection, there’s arguably nowhere better on the planet.

Cardiff’s St. John’s College had Fine Art, Modern Art, Photography, History of Art and Graphic Design at their finger-tips and almost everywhere they looked and turned. On the first day of their tour, they had time to explore Times Square, followed by dinner at Planet Hollywood and an early night.

Day 2 saw the beginning of the art wonders of the city, with a trip to the Guggenheim museum, followed by lunch and picture opportunities at Central Park. The afternoon was spent admiring the art work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the group then enjoyed dinner at The Hardrock Café in Broadway. The following day, the group visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and visited the ‘Top of the Rock’ for more photos and sketching opportunities.

The final day gave the group the opportunity to see Staten Island on a ferry tour, before heading back to the airport for their return flight home.

As fabulous as these places are, they represent only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the art museums New York has to offer at the artistic licence you have at your instant disposal. Above all, the chance to engage with this subject area in a truly brilliant setting promised to be an experience students will never forget.
